 Best shower radio yet March 4, 2010

I'm now on my second radio, the first one quit picking up stations after less than one week of use but with the great customer service of Amazon I had a replacement radio within three days and haven't had any problems since. The radio sounds great, is very easy to use, has the best reception of any shower radio I have used.Other strengths are it is easy on batteries and is also water proof, which has been tested........ The only reason I haven't given it five stars is I haven't had it long enough to test it's longevity as the first one broke quickly.

This shower radio replaced a Sony ICFS79W, which failed after several years of daily use. (The ON/Off button became intermittent, then stopped working altogether.) The Sangean is a much superior radio. Although about $40 more expensive, the Sangean radio well worth it.
The built-in handle makes it easy to use, the tuner display is easy to read, and the tuner itself picks up many more stations than the Sony, with lower noise and better sound quality. My only knock on the product is that the styling makes it look old and low-tech. It won't win any design awards or jazz up the look of your shower, but the performance is much better than I expected. Highly recommended.

I previously owned a decent shower radio made at that time by Sharper Image. Other than minor annoyances such as the clock not keeping accurate time, I enjoyed that radio. I was disappointed recently to find after the radio stopped working that they no longer made it. Then I discovered this Sangean radio.
I was initially skeptical to use another brand of radio, although I didn't have a choice. I was encouraged by all of the positive reviews on Amazon, but still skeptical. I was very pleasantly surprised with the very good quality sound, easy button access, and the large clock digits.
I highly recommend this product to anyone in search of a good quality, shower radio.

The price on this item seems to fluctuate a bit, possibly the distributor has an inventory program that changes the price according to units sold or left in stock??? I would recommend placing this in your cart for a while and waiting for a good price over a few weeks. I noticed regular shifts of about $10.

As far as the item itself, I use it as a shower radio. The sound quality and volume for AM radio is excellant, no complaints at all - it can easily be heard over the sound of the water. Even if the stream of water covers the speaker area the sound is not significanly affected. For FM radio (specifically music) I would say sound quality is fair. Volume is good, but it's a small radio with a small speaker. But, again for a shower radio the sound, even for music, is fine.
The radio is light and has a retractable, circular handle that can be used for mounting if you have someplace to hang the radio (it's not shown in the picture of the item). It also comes with an adjustable nylon strap. I had to use the strap to mount the radio as the handle was too small for the fixtures I have in the shower. The handle is a nice feature, the strap was a welcome surprise. They also include a mounting bracket if you are willing to drill screws into the wall (I'm not). If you use the wall mounting bracket the radio itself can be taken off the bracket simply by lifting so the unit would not be permanently stuck to the wall.
The radio is advertised as a floating radio - I haven't tested that and don't intend to. I suppose that would make it a decent emergency radio since rain wouldn't affect it (but there are specialized radios for that purpose).
All in all, I can say that it's better than I expected.

This is not only the best shower radio we have ever owned, it's the best radio of any kind! We spent the extra money for this one because of its good reviews, in hope of pulling in the stations we like, and it really delivers. Our previous shower radios could only receive one or two stations, as we have several "dead spots" in our home. The Sangean lets us choose ALL available stations with ease, and does it all over the house! We frequently carry it to other rooms to listen to our favorite shows, and may buy a second one, because the sound quality is better than our more expensive receivers. A great product!
