Get a grip! These are great! September 5, 2010 Kaio (Santa Monica, CA) I almost didn't get these after reading all the mediocre reviews, but I'm glad I followed my own instincts and took the leap! I actually got the Set of 2 version but thought I'd post this review here as well since some may find it helpful. Let me answer a few questions I had before buying:
Do They Stick?
YES! Quite well actually. Just be sure they're centered on a bathroom tile and not resting over any seams between tiles. Mine are rock solid and I have total confidence in them.
Do They Work on 4" Tiles?
YES! But you have to place them diagonally across 3 tiles. I think some people got stuck on the idea of mounting them vertically or horizontally and never thought to mount them on a diagonal. Again, just make sure the suction cups are only touching the smooth tile, and not the grouted seams.
Can They Hold My Full Body Weight?
Yes, if mounted properly, but I wouldn't tempt fate unless it was an emergency. Let's be smart about this -- it's a couple of suction cups stuck to tile, and probably not the smartest move to think you can dangle from them like monkey-bars. Nor is it smart to think you can lazily drag yourself in and out of the tub while clinging to these. You still have to support your own body weight as much as possible and just use these for balance. If you're looking for something to pull your full weight out of the shower as if you're paralyzed, then keep looking. But I also have grab bars mounted to the wall with 3" screws, and I wouldn't trust those to drag my full body weight in and out of the tub either. However, if I were falling and needed to catch my balance, I'd definitely grab a hold of anything to save myself. Having said that, I did hold on to one of these grab bars and leaned back to see how sturdy it felt, and it held my weight just fine (even with some tugging); grabbing 2 at the same time felt even more secure. And I'm a heavy guy, so take it for what it's worth.
Rubberized Grips:
I didn't notice this online, but the grab bars also have a rubberized grip on the underside of the grab bar. This is a very nice touch and helps a lot when the grab bars are wet.
If You're Truly Concerned About Bath Safety...
Buy a tub clamp! I bought the pair of these in conjunction with the Drive Medical Steel Clamp on Tub Rail, and between the 3, I've never felt more confident getting in and out of the shower! And Amazon is giving free 2 day shipping on the tub clamp, so hurry and get one before the promotion is over!
Bottom Line:
These suction grab bars are great for what they are, but true bathroom safety shouldn't rely on just one solution. It isn't "either / or" and requires more than one assistive device to get the job done. I'm very happy with this purchase. In fact, I'm taking them with me on my next vacation!
Very Pleased September 1, 2010 Trisha Smith (BENNINGTON, KS, US) I am a RN for a hospice agency. We purchesed this product, along with two other safety bars for one of our patients. We are very happy with it, as is he. The suction cups grip tightly to the sides of his shower stall, and bath tub. It is easy to attach, and very easy to relocate as needed. Overall very pleased with this product.
safe-er grab bar August 3, 2010 William J. Lasch I liked it so much I bought two more. I gave one to my brother-in-law, who has a problem with balance in the shower. The suction is very strong and can be removed easily for travel. Not made to support full body weight. Great for balance'
Great Product July 20, 2010 Neil D. (North Pole, AK United States) Every time I step into the shower I grab one of these (I have two) and always think "what a great product". These replaced two Get-A-Grip products I had which proved to be absolutely useless after no more than two weeks use. These Saf-er-Grips on the other hand have proven excellent. Of course, I never use them to bear any significant weight. They are not intended for that. But they provide a needed handhold for stability and they have been great in that capacity. I have repositioned them a couple times seeking the best locations, but they have never once loosened on their own. I check them daily before stepping into the shower and they are always solid. I have used them over two months now and believe they have been well worth the low price I paid for them. Whenever we travel I'll be popping these off the wall and packing them in a suitcase so we can feel secure in any shower or bath.
I would recommend these to anyone needing something simple for stability in a shower or bath. Absolutely great product so far. Stay away from the cheaply made (but comparably priced) imitations!! I doubt you'll go wrong with these Saf-er-Grips.
Incidentally, I selected this product based on user reviews when I was having so much trouble with my original products. I appreciate the folks who took the time to say good things about this item. They surely helped me.
Great product July 14, 2010 R. Lambert (Hickory, NC) I installed this item in my elderly mother's bath, and it attached securely to ceramic tiles. I tried to remove it once it was properly installed and determined it to be very secure, and she loves it.
