Take it with you on vacation or when traveling overnight at friends or family. It's good to have one at the grandparents home too. The suction cup area must cover mounting area fully to grip and can not be porous or textured.

 Unsafe Product - Use With Caution August 17, 2009

I purchased this product (came as a twin pack), for extra support getting in and out of the shower. I don't really need to put my entire weight on these, just something to steady myself while entering/exiting the tub/shower.
I followed the directions for application/install very carefully. I have a tile shower surround, but the tile pieces are large so grout lines were not a consideration. And the tile is not highly polished, nor is it porous. I cleaned the tile where these were to be installed, and made sure the surface was thoroughly dried. I then cleaned and dried the suction cups of this "safety" grip. One of these grips lasted about 1 hour before the suction cups gave out and it fell into the tub (with an enormous racket!). I re-installed it, going through all the same pre-cleaning/drying setup. This time it lasted 2 days before the suction cups gave loose and the thing fell into the tub. (With the same racket and at 1:00am!) I had installed this on vertically - perhaps a problem?
The second grip I installed horizontally, and followed the same instructions as above. I was shocked when this one lasted for a couple a months. Then, one day, I went to grab it and it moved. Good thing I didn't have my full weight on this, or I could have been badly injured. I remembered the instructions stating the suction cups could loosen over time, and the grips would need to be "re-installed." I followed the same procedure as above (cleaning/drying), and re-installed this grip horizontally. It popped off immediately. Huh. I made sure the entire surface was absolute dry, and re-installed it slightly higher (different spot). It stuck. Good. Until 2:00am when the darn thing fell off the shower tile and clanged in the tub.
If your purpose is to buy this product for some one elderly or infirmed, I cannot recommend it. The suction cups loosen, and there is no warning to the individual using it. I would hate to think what would happen to some one if they grabbed this product while in a slippery shower or tub, have it move suddenly or dislodged entirely, and the person were to fall. Not a pleasant thought.
However, if you need to be awaken (as well as the entire household, including pets) in the early hours of the morning, this might make a great device to get you out of bed with the racket it makes when it falls off the wall!
Seriously, I think this product is just too unsafe to use for its intended purpose.

I bought two of these to help my 87-year-old mother navigate along the 10-foot vanity in her bathroom. The surface is flat and highly polished granite. The bars would not hold longer than a few minutes under the best of circumstances. We found this out when she entered OK, but the first bar turned loose on her exit. Time passed? About five minutes. She was NOT supporting her weight, but only using the bars for stability. We checked them both in different places and neither of them would hold securely enough to be trusted. I am considering sending this info to the Consumer Product Safety Commission so that no one(else)will be fooled by that extremely misleading TV ad that shows some goober going up the slanted deck of a boat using these things as steps.

We purchased this at the beginning of February and within a week on of the suctions would not stay. My husband had ankle surgery and is in a cast. He needed something to help him keep his balance when getting in and out of the tub. one of the suctions kept losing suction and when he reach up to grab it, it popped off the wall and he fell back in it tub. We are extremely disappointed. I also noticed that we paid $10.99 for it and now it's $5.99.

If you are using this product as a bathroom handle, it's not as safe as it may seem. I bought this for my disabled mother for her use of getting in and out of the bathtub. I was using it to get out of the bathtub myself and the water made the product lose suction and I actually fell. I'm 18 and I was slightly bruised but okay, just glad it was me and not my mom. Make sure that the product stays dry. I would not recommend using it in the bathroom. We no longer use the handle and I would return it if it wasn't too much of a hassle.

After suffering a motorcycle accident broken leg, I needed to add safety grip handles to my shower. That could have cost thousands of dollars to have a contractor find the studs behind my large extruded plastic shower enclosure or... instead install these simple but effective vacuum-cup shower grips. These suckers stay put when properly applied to a smooth, hard surface and with the suction cup area primed with a slight amount of water. Plus, they have a safety feature that causes a green dot to change to a red dot if the suction cup comes loose. Finally, they are also easy to remove when the time comes. A great product, well-made.
