Product Description
When the balance between good and evil is upset in Fairy Tale Land, it is up to Ella to pull together an unlikely group of dwarves, fairies, and bumbl

Amazon.com
With the success of Shrek, more irreverent animated fairy tales (like Hoodwinked) were inevitable. Unfortunately, the original blockbuster set the bar so high--for characterization, humor, and heart--that other such 'toons are sure to seem redundant. Neither as clever nor as intricately rendered as the tale of the great green ogre, Happily N'Ever After is no exception. That said, small children may find it easier to follow, i.e. no Matrix references. As with the live-action Ella Enchanted, the CGI-animated story revolves around a downtrodden lass named Ella (Sarah Michelle Gellar). Her full name, naturally, is Cinderella. The man of her dreams is pea-brained Prince Humperdink (Patrick Warburton). Little does she know that royal dishwasher Rick (Freddie Prinze Jr., Gellar's real-life husband) has his eye on her. When the Wizard (George Carlin) goes off on a golfing vacation, he leaves bumbling assistants Munk (Wallace Shawn) and Mambo (Andy Dick) in charge. In no time at all, they get into a scuffle, and Ella's evil stepmother, Frieda (Sigourney Weaver), swoops in to take control of Fairy Tale Land. Her first order of business: Let the bad guys win. Consequently, Sleeping Beauty continues to doze, the Seven Dwarves wind up in jail, etc. Ella joins forces with Rick to set things right. Along the way, she realizes that the lowly lad has more princely qualities than the actual prince, and Frieda's reign turns out to be shorter than intended. It's not a bad idea, but the movie drags and the tunes are unmemorable. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

2 out of 5 stars JUST OK,,,   July 27, 2010
D. Chalk (Chicago, IL)
THIS MOVIE IS JUST OK. MY 3 YEAR OLD SAT THRU ONLY 30 MIN AND WAS THEN BORED. I THOUGHT IT WAS CUTE, SOMEWHAT FUNNY, SIGOURNEY'S CHARACTER WAS GREAT (AND SHE LOOKED GREAT TOO! EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS A VILLAIN, SHE GIVES THE ROGER RABBIT BOMBSHELL A RUN FOR HER MONEY) BUT THE OTHER VOICE TALENTS WERE AVERAGE AT BEST. GREAT VALUE FOR THE PRICE I PAID, BUT IT IS NO FINDING NEMO, TOY STORY OR WALLIE BY ANY MEANS.

2 out of 5 stars N'Ever Manages To Succeed   July 19, 2010
Del Keyes (In the middle of the Sunshine)
"Happily N'Ever After" attempted to join the ranks of "Shrek" in being the anti-fairy tale movie, and it failed spectacularly because it's not anti-fairy tale at all. What worked with "Shrek" is the way it diverged roles of common archetypes; mainly, the villains are the good guys (or they become good guys) and vice versa. This film never took that direction; it never even followed the direction of "Hoodwinked". It just add characters within their own sides, shift the story a bit but follow the same fairy tale layout. The result is nothing short of unimaginative.

The fairytale world has been overseen by God, or rather a wizard who controls the fate of every character in their fairy tale through his magic globe; I wonder, does the world repeat once each fairy tale's finished? He has a couple of goofy sidekicks to watch over his stuff, because he would rather trust a couple of comic reliefs than hiring young wizard apprentices that would guarantee not to cause plot-related trouble when he's gone. And of course he's on vacation, and during a Cinderella story, Frieda the Stepmother overheard commotion from where the wizard's room is located (in the Prince's castle, instead of somewhere discreet like a forest, pond, or the sky). Frieda went inside, stole the wizard's staff that was left for the comic reliefs, and decided to use her power to bring all the villains of the fairy tale and to not give this world a happy ending. Although her acts for a sad ending has less to do with world domination and more on making pranks. When (Cinder)Ella's prince isn't around, she has to depend on the sidekicks and a dishwasher to---I don't really care at this point.

The story could've been much better if it does a little tweaking. Make The Wizard the major villain, since he controls the fate of the characters. Have Frieda go on her evil spree until she realized that she has no control of her destiny, and so she and his hencemen join forces with the good guys to stop the big bad and make them control their own destiny. The actual premise has room for interesting twists; it could've been a good parallel to "Princess Tutu". It's too bad the writing stuff doesn't care, because they seem too distracted on the illustrations of Frieda.

I can't blame them if they actually are, because if there's one good thing about this movie, it's Frieda. Not because of her character nor of her as a 'compelling' villain, but because she's probably the hottest stepmother in animation. Her design screams 'va-va-voom', she's voiced by Sigourney Weaver (alluring mature voice), and most of her actions are a double entendre: she called everything around her 'her toys', she caresses her staff, and her chest vibrates when she laughs. A movie has to be incredible dull for me to desperately take something as eye candy (and it sure isn't the visuals).

But that's what "Happily N'Ever After" is. Nothing was entertaining, the jokes are elementary, the animation is below-par, the comic reliefs are riddled with hogwash dialogue, and the lead couple have about as much chemistry as a stick and a rock; at least the rock knows when to shut up. The main hero, a dishwasher named Rick, who can't stop complaining about how unfortunate his life is and making 'witty' commentary about the people around him. I wouldn't bicker on such a character if he didn't look like Prince of Persia, so the guy needs to lay off on the pretentious cynicism. I never find him likable, and the same goes for Ella, who is practically a no-character; nothing more than a role piece to jot through the tale. It doesn't bother to make any kind of creative effort, it's a low-rent film designed only for kids. And yet, I watched this with my 9-year-old nephew, and he said it was 'stupid'; there goes the demographic.

4 out of 5 stars fantasy fun   June 14, 2010

This cartoon production is fun, has some learning points and a great children's flick that is enjoyable for adults, too.

2 out of 5 stars the characters of Mambo,Munk, and the Evil Stepmother slightly elevate the movie   March 3, 2010
falcon (canada)
i wasn't exactly impressed with this
animated film, although the idea was interesting.however,it falls apart
somewhere in the execution.i came dangerously close to being
bored.there were only three reasons i didn't fall asleep.the voice
talents of Andy Dick as Mambo,Wallace Shawn as Munk, and especially
Sigourney Weaver as the Evil Stepmother.there were a few amusing
moments with Mambo and Munk, and Weaver was perfectly cast.otherwise, the
movie was pretty tedious.for me,Happily N'Ever After is a 2/5

I would have to say this is one of the favorite movies. It really is awesome.
